A guided 3.2-mile hike through Poinsett State Park along the Scout and Coquina Trails will combine outdoor exploration with the rich Revolutionary War history of Sumter County as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Along the route, the experience will highlight the story of the Battle of Halfway Swamp in nearby Pinewood and the skirmishes that impacted the area surrounding Poinsett State Park during the Revolutionary War.
Stops at the Historic Overlook Shelter, Singleton’s Grist Mill, and the Coquina Shelter will showcase both the mill’s role during the American Revolution and the important preservation work completed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Surrounded by the unique landscapes of the Sandhills and wetlands, the hike will celebrate the natural beauty and historical significance that make Poinsett State Park one of South Carolina’s treasured public lands.
