The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ Living Shoreline Program works to protect and restore coastal habitats by using natural materials and ecosystems — such as oyster reefs, marsh grasses, and other native vegetation — to stabilize shorelines, improve water quality, and provide critical wildlife habitat.
On July 27th, a living shoreline service project will take place at Fort Johnson, where restoration efforts will showcase how nature-based solutions can help strengthen South Carolina’s coast against erosion and environmental change. From 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM, members of the public are invited to attend an educational talk and get a behind-the-scenes look at this active restoration project while learning about the science, conservation benefits, and long-term impact of living shoreline work along the South Carolina coast.
