A morning adventure harvesting sweetgrass will offer a unique opportunity to connect with one of the Lowcountry’s most treasured cultural traditions while exploring the coastal landscapes where this important natural resource grows.
Participants will learn about the history and significance of sweetgrass basket weaving, a centuries-old African American art form brought to the Lowcountry by enslaved West Africans and preserved through generations of Gullah Geechee culture.
Sweetgrass baskets are recognized as both functional works of art and powerful symbols of heritage, storytelling, and resilience within coastal South Carolina communities. This experience highlights the deep connection between culture, conservation, and the natural environment while honoring the traditions and craftsmanship that continue to shape the identity of the Lowcountry today.
