A visit to Caw Caw Interpretive Center offers an opportunity to explore one of the Lowcountry’s most distinctive natural and cultural landscapes while learning about the region’s rich history and ecology.
Situated within more than 650 acres of wetlands, forests, and former rice fields, Caw Caw preserves a landscape shaped by both natural systems and human history, including the labor and ingenuity of enslaved Africans who developed the area’s historic rice cultivation infrastructure. Walking the trails and boardwalks provides a firsthand look at the diverse wildlife, bird habitats, and freshwater ecosystems that make the site an important conservation area today. This experience highlights the connection between history, conservation, and outdoor recreation while encouraging a deeper appreciation for the landscapes and stories that define South Carolina’s Lowcountry.
