The SC7 core team will spend the day exploring the ACE Basin aboard the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ Discovery research vessel, gaining a firsthand look at one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the East Coast.
During the excursion, SCDNR scientists will conduct a trawling demonstration, pulling a net through the estuary and discussing the marine life collected along the way. The experience will highlight the incredible biodiversity of the ACE Basin, which provides critical habitat for fish, birds, shellfish, and countless other species that depend on the health of these coastal ecosystems.

Throughout the journey, the team will also learn about the nationally recognized conservation efforts that have protected the ACE Basin through conservation easements and collaborative land stewardship. By preserving large stretches of wetlands, forests, and tidal waterways from development, these easements help maintain water quality, wildlife habitat, and the ecological integrity of the region while ensuring that one of South Carolina’s most significant natural landscapes remains protected for future generations. This participation day is closed to the public.
