South Carolina’s state parks aren’t just places to visit — they’re places to make memories. They’re where families camp for the first time, where kids learn to skip rocks, where you unplug and reconnect with what really matters.

So pack your hiking boots, bring your sense of adventure, and maybe a few snacks. Here, you’ll find a few of the top trails to explore. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just passing through, there’s a park waiting to welcome you.

Step back in time and explore one of South Carolina’s pivotal Revolutionary War battlefields. The Battlefield Trail begins at scenic Horseshoe Falls and winds through the rolling hills and woodlands of the South Carolina Backcountry — the very grounds where the Battle of Musgrove Mill took place on August 19, 1780.

Along the trail, interpretive signs share the story of the battle, the soldiers who fought there, and the site’s lasting legacy. Be sure to stop by the visitor center to dive deeper into the area’s history and enjoy a relaxing lunch at the on-site picnic shelter.

#3: Table Rock State Park

158 Ellison Lane, Pickens, SC

Home to South Carolina’s most iconic hike, the trail to the summit of Table Rock Mountain climbs over 2,000 feet and rewards you with breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains — a true must-do for avid hikers.

Looking for something more relaxed? Try the Lakeside Trail, a flat, family-friendly walk along the water, or explore the Carrick Creek Trail, a scenic two-mile loop featuring cascading waterfalls and lush forest views.

#4: Keowee-Toxaway State Park

108 Residence Drive, Sunset, SC

Explore 5.5 miles of scenic trails, including the Natural Bridge Nature Trail, where you’ll walk the same lands once traveled by the Cherokee. Cross the park’s namesake natural bridge over Poe Creek, and enjoy a peaceful hike through forested terrain.

#5: Oconee Station State Historic Site

500 Oconee Station Road, Walhalla, SC

Take an easy hike through a beautiful Appalachian cove forest to reach Station Cove Falls — a stunning, 60-foot cascading waterfall flowing from the top of Station Mountain. In spring and summer, the trail comes alive with colorful wildflowers, making it a perfect seasonal stroll.

#6: Charlestowne Landing State Historic Site

1500 Old Towne Road, Charleston, SC

Experience a unique blend of history and nature at the site of South Carolina’s first permanent European settlement. Hike through the original settlement grounds and discover the birthplace of South Carolina.

With seven miles of paved and unpaved trails, the park is perfect for walkers of all ages. Don’t miss the Animal Forest, a family favorite featuring animals that once roamed the Carolina colony.
