A walk through Kings Mountain National Military Park provides an opportunity to experience the site of one of the most important battles of the American Revolution and reflect on its significance as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of independence.
Fought on October 7, 1780, the Battle of Kings Mountain was a decisive Patriot victory that marked a major turning point in the Southern Campaign. Frontier militia forces from across the Appalachian backcountry defeated Loyalist troops commanded by British Major Patrick Ferguson, disrupting British plans to gain control of the South and energizing the Patriot cause. Often described as the battle that “turned the tide of the war in the South,” Kings Mountain stands as a powerful reminder of the determination and resilience that shaped the founding of the United States. This experience honors the history, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of those who fought for American independence on this historic ground.
